Exfoliating Before a Spray Tan: Why It Matters More Than You Think

As your go-to tanning expert, I get this question all the time, and today we’re breaking it down in a way that’s quick, clear, and (bonus!) helps you get the most flawless, long-lasting glow possible.

Why Exfoliating Before a Spray Tan Is Non-Negotiable

Let’s start with the science. Spray tans work by sitting on the top layer of your skin, the same layer that's constantly renewing itself. That means if you don’t exfoliate beforehand, your tan might cling to skin that’s already halfway out the door. Translation: your glow could fade faster, look uneven, or even appear patchy. No thanks.

Exfoliating = giving your tan fresh, even skin to cling to.

And when your skin is smooth and prepped, your tan lasts longer, looks more even, and fades gracefully.

Timing Matters: When to Exfoliate for Best Results

We know exfoliation is key, but the timing matters just as much as the act itself.

Exfoliate a day or two before your appointment (not on the day of). This gives your skin time to recover and replenish its natural amino acids, which are crucial for proper tan development.

Here’s why: DHA (the ingredient that gives you that bronzy glow) reacts with amino acids on your skin to create color. If you exfoliate right before your appointment, you may scrub away too many of those amino acids, resulting in a lighter, less even tan. Allowing your skin at least 12 hours to rest after exfoliation enables better, more even results.

Our Favorite Exfoliation Products (That Won’t Ruin Your Skin)

Good exfoliation doesn’t mean harsh scrubbing. You should never leave the shower with red, irritated skin. That’s doing more harm than good. At Apres Soleil, we carry tanning-safe exfoliants that are effective, gentle, and made to support your glow, not sabotage it. And the story behind them is one we’re proud to share.

These products are developed by a female founder in Georgia, who runs a thriving spray tan studio and created this line in collaboration with her sister, a dermatologist. Every formula is clean, gentle, and dermatologist-informed, made with high-quality ingredients that rival luxury skincare without the high price point. Her mission is to give clients a safe, effective, and affordable way to care for their skin (whether or not they’re tanning!).

These products aren’t just for tanners. They’re designed for regular, everyday use as a clean skincare staple. Most people only think about exfoliating when they’re prepping for a tan, but that’s selling your skin short.

Final Tips for a Flawless Finish

Exfoliate the night before your appointment

  • Use gentle tools or products. Never scrub your skin raw

  • Follow with a light, oil-free moisturizer (avoid anything heavy or greasy)

  • Show up to your appointment with clean, dry skin, no lotions, deodorant, or makeup

Exfoliating may feel like an extra step, but trust us, it’s the step that separates a good tan from a glowing, long-lasting, head-turning one. ✨

Have questions about your prep? We're always here to help. Or better yet, swing by the studio and let us show you the products in person. Your glow starts here.
