The Fall Family Photo Spray Tan Guide: How to Get Your Tan Just Right
Fall always seems to arrive with a full calendar. Family photos, weddings, school events, weekend getaways, holiday cards, and all those occasions where you suddenly realize: Oh right, there will be pictures.
A spray tan is one of the easiest ways to feel a little more polished and confident before a special event, but timing matters. If you have family photos or a fall event coming up, here’s how to make sure your tan looks natural, even, and camera-ready.
When Should You Get a Spray Tan Before Family Photos?
For most clients, we recommend scheduling your spray tan 1–2 days before your photos or event.
That gives your tan time to fully develop and settle into the skin while still looking fresh. It also gives you enough time for your first rinse and for the color to soften into a natural finish.
If your photos are on Saturday, Thursday or Friday is usually the sweet spot.
And if you’re new to spray tanning or trying a new formula, booking a trial tan a few weeks beforehand can give you extra peace of mind.
Prep Makes a Big Difference
The best spray tans start before you ever walk into the studio.
In the 24 hours before your appointment:
Exfoliate your skin thoroughly, paying extra attention to dry areas like elbows, knees, ankles, and wrists.
Shave or wax ahead of time rather than immediately before your appointment.
Avoid heavy lotions, oils, or self-tanner residue.
Arrive with clean, dry skin and no deodorant, makeup, perfume, or body lotion.
Think of it as giving your tan the smoothest possible canvas.
Choose Your Photo-Day Color Carefully
For family photos, the goal usually isn’t to look dramatically darker. It’s to look like the best version of yourself.
A natural spray tan can add warmth to the skin, subtly define arms and legs, and help even out your overall skin tone without competing with your outfit, makeup, or the rest of the family.
This is especially helpful for fall photos, when wardrobes tend to shift toward creams, browns, denim, black, burgundy, olive, and other deeper seasonal colors.
If you’re unsure how dark to go, tell us what you’re wearing, when your photos are scheduled, and the look you want. We can help choose the right formula and depth for you.
What to Wear After Your Appointment
After your tan, wear loose, dark clothing and avoid anything tight that could rub against your skin while the color develops.
Skip leggings, tight bras, socks, and fitted waistbands when possible.
Once you’ve completed your recommended rinse, gently pat your skin dry and keep it hydrated with a simple moisturizer.
Don't Forget the Little Details
A few small things can make a big difference on photo day.
Avoid exfoliating between your spray tan and your photos. Keep showers warm rather than very hot, skip long baths, and moisturize daily.
If you’re getting a manicure, pedicure, facial, massage, or waxing appointment, try to schedule those before your spray tan rather than after.
And if you’re planning a full beauty lineup before your event, book your spray tan toward the end.
Fall Photos Are Better When You Feel Like Yourself
The best family photos are never about looking perfect. They’re about feeling comfortable enough to forget about the camera.
Your spray tan should do the same thing. A little extra warmth, an even finish, and one less thing to think about when it’s time to get everyone dressed, out the door, and smiling at the same time.
