How to Look Glowy (Not Orange) for Fall Events & Photos

Pumpkin orange belongs in your fall décor. But your spray tan? That should look like you.

With homecoming photos, Halloween parties, and plenty of reasons to get dressed up, October is a good time for a little extra glow. If you’ve been considering a spray tan but worry about looking orange or going too dark, start with a color that suits your skin and a plan that fits your event.

Here’s how to get ready.

Choose Your Glow, Not Just a Shade

You don’t have to choose the darkest tan to make an impact. A subtle glow can be the perfect finishing touch, especially if you’re fair or trying spray tanning for the first time.

At Après Soleil in Walnut Creek, your appointment starts with a conversation about your skin tone, the look you want, and what you’re getting ready for. We customize your airbrush tan around those details.

Tell us if you’re hoping for barely-there warmth, a little more bronze, or something in between. And if a previous tan left you looking orange, let us know what happened so we can discuss your concerns.

Homecoming: Plan Around the Photos

You’ve found the outfit and figured out your hair. Give your tan a spot on the calendar, too.

We recommend scheduling your spray tan two days before your event. For a Saturday homecoming, that means a Thursday appointment.

Think about your neckline, straps, and any open-back details when deciding what to wear during your tanning session. Anything you keep on can leave tan lines, so let your technician know what your dress or outfit will show.

If this is your first spray tan and you’d feel more comfortable knowing what to expect, ask us about scheduling a trial ahead of the big weekend.

Halloween: Let the Costume Set the Mood

Whether you’re dressing as a disco queen, a beach-bound Barbie, or something entirely your own, your tan can be as subtle or bold as you’d like.

Consider how much skin your costume shows and the overall look you’re going for. A little warmth might be all you want. There’s no need to choose a deeper shade simply because it’s a party.

Bring a photo of your costume if that helps explain your vision. And plan your appointment so you can complete your development time and first rinse before getting dressed for the night.

What to Wear After Your Appointment

Follow our prep instructions before your appointment:

  • Exfoliate and shave the day before.

  • Arrive with skin free of lotion, oils, makeup, perfume, and deodorant.

  • Wear dark, loose clothing and loose sandals afterward.

Save the fitted homecoming dress, leggings, and costume boots for later.

Follow Your Rinse Instructions

Your technician will tell you when to rinse based on the solution used. Follow that timing rather than borrowing a friend’s routine.

If your tan includes an instant bronzer, remember that the color you see immediately after your appointment isn’t the finished result. Some color washing away during your first rinse is expected.

Once you’ve completed your rinse and development instructions, keep your skin moisturized and avoid scrubbing to help your glow fade evenly.
