Why Didn't My Spray Tan Develop? 7 Common Reasons (And Most Aren't Your Fault)
Few things are more disappointing than rinsing off your spray tan only to wonder...
"Wait...where did it go?"
In most cases, your spray tan solution worked exactly as it was supposed to. Your skin, hormones, medications, or aftercare may have affected how the color developed.
At Après Soleil, this is one of the most common questions we hear, so let's walk through the biggest reasons your spray tan may not have developed as expected.
1. Hormones Can Affect Your Results
Hormonal changes are one of the biggest (and least talked about) factors in spray tanning.
Pregnancy, menopause, thyroid disorders, menstrual cycles, fertility treatments, and other hormone fluctuations can all change how your skin reacts with DHA, the ingredient that creates your tan.
Some clients develop lighter than usual, while others may notice uneven areas.
This isn't something you did wrong; it's simply how your body chemistry can influence the tanning process.
2. Certain Medications Can Interfere
Some medications can affect skin turnover, hydration, or the chemical reaction that creates your tan.
We've occasionally seen lighter development in clients taking medications for thyroid conditions, acne, chemotherapy, or other medical treatments.
Never stop or change a medication because of your spray tan, but if you're starting something new, let your spray tan artist know. We can often adjust your solution or recommend the best timing for your appointment.
3. You Sweated Before Your First Rinse
Your spray tan needs completely dry skin while it develops. Even a small amount of moisture can interfere with the process.
This does not only mean obvious sweating from a workout. One of the most common things we see is a client running errands after an appointment on a hot day. Your skin may begin to glisten as your body tries to keep you from overheating, even if you never feel noticeably sweaty. Because it doesn’t feel like “sweat,” it is easy to assume your tan is safe, but that invisible moisture can still prevent the color from developing evenly.
After your appointment, avoid errands, cooking over a hot stove, cleaning, sitting in a warm car, walking outside in the heat, or anything else that may cause your skin to become warm or damp before your first rinse.
For at least the first 24 hours, you should also avoid excessive sweating from activities such as heavy cardio, hot yoga, or heavy weightlifting.
Whenever possible, plan to go straight home after your appointment and keep your skin cool, dry, and comfortable.
4. Your Skin Was Too Dry (or Too Moisturized)
Healthy, hydrated skin produces the best spray tan.
Very dry patches, especially elbows, knees, hands, ankles, and feet, can absorb too much solution and develop unevenly.
On the other hand, lotions, oils, deodorant, perfume, or residue left on the skin before your appointment can create a barrier that prevents the tanning solution from absorbing properly.
The ideal prep:
Exfoliate 24 hours before your appointment.
Skip lotions, oils, makeup, perfume, and deodorant the day of your tan.
Arrive with clean, dry skin.
5. You Rinsed Too Early (or Waited Too Long)
Rapid and traditional eight-hour spray tans develop differently, so it is important to follow the exact rinse time your artist gives you.
Rapid Spray Tans
A rapid tan continues processing until you rinse it. If you rinse before your designated time, your result will likely be lighter than the shade you agreed upon. If you leave it on past the recommended time, it may develop darker and potentially brassier than intended.
Traditional Eight-Hour Spray Tans
An eight-hour tan needs the full eight hours to activate. Rinsing before that time can leave your result lighter than expected. Once the eight-hour activation period is complete, however, the tan stops processing, so leaving it on longer will not make it darker.
Following your artist’s instructions is the best way to achieve the color you selected during your appointment.
6. Your Skin Naturally Exfoliates Faster
Everyone's skin is different.
Some people naturally shed skin cells more quickly than others, causing spray tans to develop lighter or fade faster.
Frequent swimming, hot tubs, long hot showers, exfoliating products, retinoids, and certain skincare routines can also shorten the life of your tan.
It's completely normal and doesn't mean your spray tan was applied incorrectly.
7. Sometimes Your Body Chemistry Is Simply Different
Every body is unique.
Even when two people receive the exact same solution using the exact same technique, their results can be completely different.
That's why custom spray tanning is so important.
At Après Soleil, we keep notes on your previous appointments so we can make adjustments based on how your skin develops over time. Sometimes a small tweak to your solution or processing time makes all the difference.
